There are plenty of new things that you can expect on your Jiu Jitsu journey. When you’re one of BJJ white belts, you’ll get to widen your horizons, but that doesn’t mean that the journey ever ends – even when you become a black belt. But, in order to make the most out of this experience, it’s important that you keep in mind a handful of things that will make the said journey all the more meaningful.
1. Feel free to take a notebook with you
BJJ classes for beginners will require you to take in a lot of technical information. So, why not make sure that you remember it all by writing things down? You may find this strange at first since Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is martial arts, but you still need to take notice of the philosophy, moves, and technique behind it. With a notebook by your side, it will be easy for you to keep track of everything you learn and even come up with some questions.
2. So, keep asking questions
In order to learn more, it’s very important that you feel brave enough to ask everything that interests you. After all, the only way to make things clear is to ask away. Don’t feel pressured or embarrassed just because you are an adult. In the end, you belong to the group of BJJ white belts and it’s only logical to need help with understanding different moves and approaches in Jiu Jitsu. Those who always make a point to ask questions will definitely better themselves more during the training.
3. Competition is highly beneficial
Even if you’re not someone who enjoys competing with others, BJJ competitions will come in handy when it comes to improving your skills. This doesn’t mean that BJJ white belts will have to put themselves in uncomfortable and dangerous situations. Quite the contrary. Being able to go up against higher belts and other white belts will allow you to notice different moves and techniques, learn how to use your own body better, and come up with more questions that will help your betterment.
4. Know your rules
It’s only logical that you should do your best and learn as much as you can when taking up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This is especially true if you plan to enter some competitions, as mentioned previously. The main BJJ rule set is definitely the IBJJF but different variations and standards are a common occurrence. This is precisely why you should talk to your coach in order to learn whatever you can about the competition rules so that you don’t lose easy points.
5. Consistency is the key
If you have the time and will to train 6 days a week, that’s absolutely great! But don’t do that for a week only not to show up again for the next month. In the end, it’s better to attend your training sessions twice and even once a week if you’re going to do that consistently. Only regular practice and learning will lead to improvement.
Most importantly, BJJ white belts should always keep in mind that Jiu Jitsu training sessions are supposed to be fun. There’s no point in putting effort into something you don’t enjoy. Therefore, never let BJJ become something that makes you anxious when this martial arts is all about the mindfulness and self-care.
