Reaching the point when you simply don’t know what to do next with your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practice is something that happens to everyone. The important thing is to stay aware that such phenomenon is completely normal; and that you just have to break the Jiu Jitsu plateau. Essentially, there are different ways you can use in order to stop being “stuck” and they are all pretty efficient.
1. Participate in a competition
Taking part in a BJJ competition is a great way to get back your motivation and will to improve. Sometimes, everyone just needs that something “extra” to keep pushing harder and challenge themselves more. For a BJJ student who wants to break the Jiu Jitsu plateau, competition may be just the right kind of encouragement to do exactly that. Essentially, a competition will give you a solid reason to train harder and more frequently. This is a sure way to make a significant difference from where you are now.
2. Go on a BJJ vacation
Another great way to break the Jiu Jitsu plateau is to take a break from your daily life and go on a BJJ vacation. Essentially, this will allow you to relax and de-stress in the new environment. You’ll also get the chance to practice BJJ in a more scenic setting with completely new people. The change of scenery and practicing partners may not seem like a lot at first, but if you’ve been feeling the stress and pressure of your everyday responsibilities for a while now, it can actually do wonders for your mental and physical strength.
3. Get yourself a new gi
Sometimes, all that’s necessary for you to break the Jiu Jitsu plateau is to treat yourself – because you deserve it. Of course, there are many ways you can treat yourself, but if you feel like you’re not making any obvious progress with your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training, getting yourself a new gi, or trying out a new style kimono, may be the motivator you need to feel energetic and enthusiastic about your training again. The clothing/gear you wear actually has a strong effect on your performance, which is precisely why there are fitness clothes, business clothes, etc. to choose from. So, why not try this trick out if you can’t afford to participate in a competition or take a vacation at the moment?
Don’t hesitate to talk to your BJJ instructor and practicing partners about experiencing the plateau. Advice from others who know exactly how you feel can be really beneficial.
