Everyone we talk to seems sick and tired of hearing that women should do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to learn self defense, and we don’t get it! As women who train, we think that every girl we know and every girl we don’t know need to get themselves enrolled into a Jiu Jitsu program ASAP, here’s why:
-When you think self defense you think getting attacked in an alley at night, right? “Oh, that’ll never happen to me!” Now think of someone grabbing your wrist and not wanting to let go. A little more realistic? Any of these scenarios can happen to anyone, and as our black belt women’s coach Juliana Fontoura always says, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”
-Unlike self defense classes, Jiu Jitsu strays from the controlled situation vs defense, and instead places you in grappling situations similar to those you would experience if something were to happen in real life. Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to defend the unexpected.
-What a lot of people also don’t realize is BJJ teaches physical, but also mental assertiveness. Making decisions for yourself, vocalizing them, and developing self confidence are all tools needed to defend yourself out in the big world. These qualities help shape leaders.
